I tre moschettieri. Topolino, Paperino, Pippo 1970
Donovan Cook
Disney's splendid reimagining of Dumas's celebrated novel, with which this animated adaptation, however, has very little to do. Great attention and care, as always, goes into developing the narrative, which unfolds over the course of just over an hour without ever succumbing to the easy lure of banal laughs. The narrative pace is skillfully constructed and never bores, not even for a moment (the running time of the cartoon is perfect in this regard), while the hilarious comic scenes flow seamlessly from the action and not vice versa, fully integrating into the careful unfolding of the linear narrative structure, which does not shy away from some farcical twists (think of the sequence between Goofy and Clarabelle on the bridge). The ending is predictable, of course, but that doesn't detract from a project that, at times, manages to reach almost poetic heights. The usual praise goes to the artists (there's nothing digital about it), and let's not forget the extraordinary musical reinterpretation of some of the most famous classical pieces, such as "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" from Bizet's Carmen, Beethoven's "Fifth Symphony," and Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld."
