Le stanze di Verdi 2025
Riccardo Marchesini
Le stanze di Verdi is a journey of discovery and remembrance through the figure and places of Giuseppe Verdi, understood not only as a composer but as a man deeply rooted in his homeland. The work stems from a desire to go beyond the ritualistic forms of biographical celebration in order to restore the Maestro's most authentic, concrete and territorial dimension, the one that nourished his artistic and civic sensibility.
The story opens with a highly evocative narrative device: Giulio Scarpati, on a theatre tour in Piacenza, is struck by a large image of Verdi displayed on the facade of a building. This unexpected encounter becomes the starting point for a search that leads him to Marco Corradi, a Verdi scholar and author of the essay Verdi non è di Parma. Together, in a vintage car, the two embark on a road trip through the Emilian countryside to discover the material and spiritual traces left by the composer.
Step by step, the documentary delves into the symbolic places of Verdi's universe: his birthplace in Roncole di Busseto, the church where the young Verdi played the organ, Villa Verdi in Villanova sull'Arda – a place of life, work and meditation – and finally the hospital founded by the Maestro for his community. Through the voices of the protagonists and the contemplative gaze of the camera, Le stanze di Verdi constructs a complex and intimate portrait of the composer: a visionary artist and at the same time a farmer, administrator, philanthropist and social innovator.
The sober and poetic visual language intertwines with the structure of the road movie, adapting the narrative rhythm to the pace of the journey and the silence of the landscape. The tranquil and evocative images portray the 'Bassa Padana' as a living organism and guardian of the values and traditions that Verdi transformed into moral and musical material, not simply a geographical backdrop.
In the final part, the realistic dimension of the story merges with the dreamlike dimension. The protagonist's state of semi-consciousness serves as a symbolic threshold between past and present, between the historical figure of Verdi and his intangible legacy. In this suspended space, dreams and memories intertwine to tell a story that is both biographical and meditative.
Thus, Le stanze di Verdi presents itself as a film about listening and permanence, inviting us to rediscover Verdi as a universal figure deeply connected to his homeland. Discovering places becomes an act of understanding the man and the artist, and a way of comprehending how his music continues to engage with the Italian landscape and collective memory. .
