To Rome with Love 2012

Woody Allen

The pulsating heart of Rome provides the backdrop for a lively ensemble comedy, in which four stories intertwine under the common theme of the complexity of human relationships and the search for self-discovery.

In the first episode, Hayley, an American tourist on vacation in Rome, meets and becomes involved with Italian lawyer Michelangelo. Her parents, Jerry and Phyllis, come to Rome to meet her fiancé and his family. Jerry, a retired record producer, recognizes the incredible singing talent of Giancarlo, Michelangelo's father (a funeral director). He convinces him to audition for some of the most important operatic figures, but he can only sing well in the shower. Jerry then stages a show at the Teatro dell'Opera, where Giancarlo performs in a specially constructed shower.

In the second episode, Antonio and Milly, young newlyweds from Southern Italy, arrive in Rome dreaming of starting a new life, thanks to the job offer Antonio receives from his wealthy aunt and uncle. The day, however, takes an unexpected turn: Milly gets lost in the city and, accidentally ending up on a film set, is captivated by Luca Salta, a famous actor who seduces her with his charisma. Meanwhile, at the hotel, Antonio finds himself involved in a misunderstanding with a prostitute, Anna, who impersonates his wife in front of his unexpected relatives. Surreal encounters, mistaken identities, and extraordinary experiences ensue.

In the third episode, Leopoldo, an ordinary man, finds himself inexplicably transformed from one day to the next into a celebrity. Interviewed, photographed, praised for no reason, Leopoldo savors the glory with growing enthusiasm. He even becomes the manager of his company, and Serafina, his former boss's attractive secretary, sleeps with him. Until one day, in the middle of yet another interview, the paparazzi spot a man "who seems more interesting," and his popularity vanishes as mysteriously as it had arrived.

The final story recounts the return of John, a celebrated American architect, to the places of his Roman youth. Wandering the streets of the neighborhood where he once lived, he meets Jack, a young architecture student, and together, he relives past events that force him to confront his own choices and regrets.
Jack lives in Rome with his Italian girlfriend. When his girlfriend's charming friend arrives for a visit, his certainties begin to crumble, torn between fidelity and desire.

With apparent lightness, the four stories paint an ironic yet melancholic portrait of the human condition.
