La Gazza Ladra 2024

Robert Guédiguian

A deeply human story unfolds around the figure of Maria, a woman with quiet strength and a gentle gaze, who has dedicated her life to caring for the elderly. Every gesture, every word, and every act of attention she shows her patients stems from genuine devotion, built not only on competence but also on sincere empathy. Over time, a solid and almost familial bond has developed between her and the people she cares for, founded on a relationship of trust that motivates her every day to give her best.
But at the heart of Maria also burns a dream: to see her young nephew, a boy with extraordinary musical talent, succeed as a pianist. She would be willing to make any sacrifice for him. Thus, despite the affection and gratitude she receives, she gradually slips into a decision that will irreversibly alter her path. Driven by the desire to help her nephew and the desperation of a situation with no conventional solutions, Maria makes a morally ambiguous choice: she begins to discreetly, then increasingly frequently, steal small sums of money from her clients. Deep down, she is convinced she is acting for a greater good, justifying her actions as an essential sacrifice motivated by love and urgent necessity.
This illusory conviction becomes the catalyst for a chain of unforeseen events. When her actions are inevitably uncovered, the fragile trust Maria had built is shattered beyond repair. The revelation of her illicit conduct causes profound upheaval in her personal life, which also reverberates into the lives of three families involved, forced to confront the weight of betrayal and the painful sense of loss. An effective reflection on the complexity of human morality and the shadowy areas that can emerge from desperate love or irresistible external pressure.
